It was the eve before Christmas day in 1941.The house was not as modern as they are today , it had a cellar which you had to go down stone steps to get any coal ,and where the copper was to do the washing. It Was very frightening at night time if the children had to go down as there was times when they had to use a candle which was stuck on a tin plate with a little of the wax, and it threw strange shadows onto the walls.
Above that was one small living room that had a small coal fire if the mother had any money to buy some. The four children who lived there with their parents were told not to expect a lot of presents on Christmas day , but they might have a very special present by the next day .Also in the living room was a small wooden table and only three chairs, so when it came to having a meal the children had to stand up. The family was very poor, as was all the other people who lived near them ,but the mother did her best to make them happy, by helping them make paper chains to hang from the ceiling .The children's father worked in the steel works but
did not get a big wage like they do today.
Above that room was only one bed room so it was very crowded at bed time. There was two large beds, the parents slept in one and the children slept what is known as top to tail , pity anyone who wee'd in bed when it was too cold to go to the out side toilet.
Well on this Christmas eve everyone went to bed , the children wondering what the special gift would be.
But on getting up that day it was just the same as any other Christmas ,until later in the day mother went upstairs to bed, Little did the children know that the special gift was on it's way. Suddenly they heard a baby cry, Janet the eldest girl was able to hold the baby girl when it was only half hour old ,oh how excited she was to find it was a baby girl and now she had a sister called Carole ,who is very special,
lots of love .
